Halloween Costumes

From the earliest times,
people wore masks when droughts or other disasters struck. They believed that
the demons who had brought their misfortune upon them would become frightened
off by the hideous masks.
The Celtics believed that with the coming of winter (a season of the dead) came
a night in which the spirits of the dead could freely roam about the earth. Some
of these spirits were evil and would bring suffering and violence . To appease
these spirits the Celtic people would put their best food offerings on their
doorsteps. Often, they wore costumes, hoping to fool an evil spirit with the
disguise.

Beginning in September, it's easy to find costumes for sale or rent in the
States, though it's not so easy on this island. I believe, however, that some of
the best costumes can be put together with your own clothes and resourcefulness,
and there are countless online resources that will help you get started. The
following ideas are ones that I have collected over many, many years. Many are
not suitable for the warm, humid Halloween nights in the tropics, but I have
included them for those who will celebrate off island this year.
